A local man visiting his favorite craft brewery made a point to show off his dated Game of Thrones t-shirt featuring Tyrion Lannister and the quote that annoying alcoholic know-it-alls couldn't get enough of: "I Drink and I Know Things."
Just in case anyone is keeping score, this man is not only a nerd, but also a beer geek. In whatever sad head game he's playing by himself, he's just scored double points.
Let me guess: this man is also some sort of self-proclaimed beer aficionado who only drinks hazy IPAs or coffee stouts. Let me also guess: all the man probably knows about Westeros he learned from HBO.
All the man probably knows about Westeros he learned from HBO.
"No, yeah I've read some of the Game of Thrones books," he bragged. "The one about the Starks." We're going to assume it's the book with the TV show tie-in cover.
"But I couldn't finish it," he continued. "Once I started watching the show, I just couldn't get back into the books. I mean, the producers did such a good job there was no need to keep reading it."
So definitely the book with the TV show tie-in cover.
He sipped his orange-juice looking beer and closed his eyes. "Oh killer IPA. So many pineapple notes."
Perhaps this guy will later be joined by a few of his buddies, all of them wearing some sort of wrinkled t-shirt that references nerd fandom or other obscure phrases from their pop-culture kingdoms. There might be a Lord of the Rings PO-TA-TOES shirt, or a deep cut referencing the outer Marvel universe "Nelson & Murdock: Attorneys at Law."
Most will order obscure dark beers, all will order "pizzas for one."
They'll battle for position within their pathetic little arena, where the most loud-mouthed and opinionated will reign supreme. Those with the inside scoop (the ones who paid hundreds of dollars to attend Comic Con) will aggressively talk trailers, sequels, and easter eggs.
For a moment the conversation will shift to George R.R. Martin's long-awaited novel, The Winds of Winter. All eyes will be on our Tyrion Lannister-wearing friend.
"You must know some things about the new book," they said, eyeing his t-shirt.
"Um," The pressure was now on. He sipped his beer. "Tyrion don't fail me now," he thought.
Thinking back to another GOT t-shirt his mom got him for Christmas a few years ago, he adeptly answers, "The Winds of Winter is coming...just not this year."
They drink. All hail the king.
